Life is a Journey

I think we all like to go on journeys.  Whether it's an extended vacation, a short jaunt to visit family or friends or just a day trip to get away from the regular routine. We relish those times.

Life is also a journey, starting the day we are born.  Each of us has a journey that is unique, and no two are quite the same.

We should stop and look at our journey from God’s viewpoint.  The Lord sees each one of us as we travel through life.  He knows the obstacles we face. I wonder if He is waiting for us to make wise choices and grow through them?  He knows the decisions we make. There is rejoicing when he sees us make the right ones.  Do you think God will send his angels to help protect us on occasion?

God has special plans for us, but we must make the choice as to whether we will follow or go our own way. When He asks us to give up something we hold dear, we can be sure He has something better. It’s like a little girl who had a toy string of pearls from the Dollar Store that she treasures.  Her father comes home one day with a string of costly pearls.  He asks her to give him the ones she had first. She struggles but finally lets go, only to find what her dad had waiting for her was much better.

God also knows the companions we have as we go along our journey.  Starting with parents, siblings, fellow students, etc. Then marriage, family, career.  Each of these companions have a part to play in shaping our life, some for the better and some for the worse. The Lord has promised to be our companion as well if we ask Him.  Are we going to take Him up on that offer or are we just going to go our own way, thinking that we know best?

If we want our journey to end well, we need to come to the Lord and ask for His help.  But if we do, know He is looking for total commitment.  Ask yourself, “How much of my life do I still want to keep for myself, doing my own thing?” It may be tempting to hold on to as much as we can, but like the little girl offered real pearls, what having the Lord in our life brings is worth so much more than what we give up.

Life with God is like riding a tandem bicycle with Jesus as the driver.  Christ is saying to us, “Hang on, you‘re in for an adventure.” Would you trust Christ to drive?

When Jesus left this earth, He sent the Holy Spirit to live in us to be our constant companion. As we give all of ourselves to God, the Spirit will guide us and work through us.  We spend time with God through prayer and time in the Bible.  God is waiting for us to come nearer to Him through the work of the Spirit. Are we going to disappoint the Lord by being too busy, or will we be there on time for that quiet time with Him?  Spending time with God is key to making our journey a success.

As we trust God to lead the way, we can be assured that when our journey comes to an end, we will hear Him say. “Well done, faithful servant.  Enter into the joy of the Lord.”
